Eco-friendly toys are eligible for the top green toy test

The Second Annual Top Green Toy Test is underway, and we need your participation!  From now until October 1, 2009, you can nominate your favorite green toy.

C’mon – I know there are a lot of green parents out there that have plenty of input on this topic.  Plus, we’re calling on green toy manufacturers, as well.  As you know, we’ve posted on green toys and green books in the past.  You know, there are even solar dollhouses!

In order to enter the top green toy test, just download the Eco Friendly Toy Test form and be sure to get your entry in by the end of next month.

But first, let’s go over the requirements for the Top Green Toy Test, which was so successful in its first year that its back now!  Sponsored by Goddard Child Development Centers and, the test:

“will evaluate the best green toys for preschool and early elementary-aged children based on the creative, child-engaging qualities, the interactive qualities, the price, and the eco friendliness of the product.”

Best green toys – tell us about them

The goal is that a list of eco-friendly toys can be developed to give guidance to parents that are concerned about finding safe toys.  Greenness is not the only criteria.  Children should want to play with the best green toys; engaging qualities that inspire creative play are highly sought after.  Thus, the following submissions will be accepted from toy makers that can meet the following:

  • the toy is eco friendly
  • the toy is affordable (under $25)
  • the toy encourages creative, social, and engaging play activities
  • the toy is interactive and lends itself to child-initiated play
  • the toy is appropriate for preschool to early elementary school-aged children

After the entries are submitted, the toys will be tested by Goddard preschoolers, to confirm their play value.  In addition Maryanne Conlin of @greenmoms on Twitter (Greenmoms Carnival) will check the entries to make sure they meet other criteria.  If your toy (or your favorite toymaker’s entry) is selected as a toy green toy, it get the right to use the Eco Friendly Toy seal on its product, as well as enjoy listing in the Top Ten Eco Friendly Toys 0f 2009.  On top of that, preschoolers at participating Goddard Schools will get to play with the Top Ten toys, and name the “Local Preschoolers Picks” for the top kid’s choices.

Don’t forget.  The contest is open to environmentally safe toy submissions until October 1, 2009.  Winners will be announced at the end of October.  Once again, to enter, download the Eco Friendly Toy Test entry form and be sure to review the guidelines.
