San Francisco Airport Carbon Kiosks 1

Air travel is a huge source of carbon emissions. Though very little can be done at the moment to reduce emissions, green minded travelers will be able to purchase carbon offsets at the San Francisco airport. The carbon kiosks at the SF airport are the result of a partnership between the city and 3Degrees, an SF based carbon firm.

The credits purchased by travelers will go into planting trees and conserving the Garcia River Forest, which has been a victim of heavy deforestation. Proceeds will also go to the city’s Carbon Fund which works to reduce CO2 emissions. The first project here would be Dogspatch Biofuels. This biofuels filling station is expected to reduce nearly 660,000 pounds of CO2 emissions in its very first year of operation.

To maintain transparency and the trust of those purchasing these offsets, the city has created a Climate Passport program using which travelers will be able to see where their money is going, and how it is being put to use.
